CBT for Tinnitus, Hyperacusis and Misophonia

CBT is short for cognitive behavioural therapy which is a form of talking therapy. CBT Hear is a specialised CBT program to help people accept and live well with tinnitus, hyperacusis or misophonia. It is not a cure , it is a learning curve: you can make peace with the fact that you have these conditions and you can move forward with your life even if they cannot be cured. What does this all means in practice?

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy

Tinnitus, Hyperacusis, Misophonia

What are they, what symptoms you might notice and what do we know about their causes?

Tinnitus

Most of us  will experience tinnitus at some point in our lives: it is a ringing/whistling noise you hear in your ears without any external source for that noise. It can last for a few seconds only or for an extended period of time. It is usually harmless and does not need medical attention. However, for some people tinnitus can become very bothersome and distressing. They might hear it all the time, it can feel very loud or disturbing, to the point of causing interruptions in their daily life. For example they feel they cannot concentrate or fall asleep because of their tinnitus.

The exact cause of tinnitus is still not known, there are some theories but what we know for sure that is created by the brain and various parts of the auditory system is involved in causing you to hear tinnitus. There is no known cure for tinnitus but certain interventions can be helpful: for example, if you have hearing loss as well, improving your hearing might help with the tinnitus. In any case, if you are experiencing tinnitus, you should see an audiologist first so they can investigate it and advice you.
